My current vessel is very similar to Mr. Starbird's. I have cruised from
Milwaukee to the Bahamas in a 35 foot power boat with, compared to sailors,
all the bells and whistles (radar, sonar, chart plotter, 2 on board
computers, LAN, Nintendo 64, TV/VCR, 2 refridgerators, 3 VHF, SSB receiver,
dinghy davits, dinghy, and more). Now, having done all that, I have made
    different choices:

    1978 Catalina 25 fin keel
8 HP Honda 4 stroke outboard with 5 amp alternator
15 gallons fuel - 150 mile range under power
    handheld GPS
    fixed VHF
    handheld VHF
    cell phone
    CD player / FM radio
    propane stove
    ice box & cooler
    2 x 11 watt solar panels
    Schafer roller furling 155% genoa
    North Sails main
    paper charts
    tools
    fishing gear
depth finder is a 4 lb lead weight on 50 ft line
3.5 HP outboard for dinghy on rail mount
roll up dinghy (stores in quarter berth)
2 man kayak (stores on deck)
set up for single-handing - all lines led aft
    harness and jackline
    roll stabilizers (for when anchored)
fishing gear and trolling rod holders.

This is not a comfortable, long range, blue water, cruiser for a family of
    4. It is a great coastal cruiser. It is very comfortable for 1 or 2,
crowded for 4 - but OK for 2 or 3 weeks. It is real easy to single hand. I
have sailed about 500 miles this year solo. It is very economical to own.
The entire boat with all equipment cost less than $6000 US. Insurance is
under $110 per year. The boat can be trailered. I sail 3 or 4 times per
week. My longest offshore passage has been 65 NM.

I plan to keep this boat for the next 10 years, retire, buy something along
the lines of a Westsail 32, and take off on my next long range cruise.
