Very interesting question Rick, I'm very new to the whole cursing
life. I purchased a vintage '67 Columbia 28' this year with
intentions to sail the intercostals waterway from Annapolis to Miami
and then to the Bahamas, Cuba and on.... early in '04.
For sure there is a lot to prepare before starting this kind of
travel and you could spend years, taking courses and reading and
sailing with others; or, you can just do it and take the bumps as
they come.
The Columbia 28 is a very basic boat, I've fitted it with an 8hp
outboard, propane stove, ice box, 2x VHF, GPS, and solar driven
power. No single side band and not air conditioning or refrigeration
and the Atomic 4 has long since died.
I constantly hear you can't sail south in a boat less than 35 or 40
feet, for sure it would be more comfortable to have more room, but
with that comes more draft and higher fees.
My interest is in sailing, exploring other places and diving.
