Oh! I forgot that Namaste was probably still in the Bay! Hadn't
gotten a "newsletter" from him Alex in a while.
We left Tigerhawk (Hunter 30) in her slip at the marina in Annapolis
and fared well - just one rub mark from a piling that resulted when
one of the spring lines snapped. Fortunately, it was only AFTER the
winds had died down that the water reached its highest level, so she
wasn't being slammed into the piling - it's only a mark.
On Wednesday night we had secured the boat with 10 dock lines/spring
lines, removed the roller-furling jib, removed the main (flaked them
out nice and neat and stowed them below - it brought back memories of
being in college when we sailed on a 42" Cape Dory named Moonbow who
did NOT have a roller-furling jib (or lazy jacks on the main!) -
taking down the jib and flaking the mainsail were standard procedure
after EVERY trip...). Lowered the boom. Stowed the lifering, the
grill, and the dinghy's outboard (as well as the deflated dinghy
itself) below...
My husband did an excellent job with the lines, anticipating the
effects of the wind and the high water as best we could. He checked
on the boat twice during the night, through waist-high water on the
dock. A small dumpster in the parking lot floated all the way out to
the main road! He used some walk lines from other slips to tie up two
other boat (power boats) that hadn't been tied well enough and were
slamming into pilings during the storm.
So we're fine. Our power here at home finally came back on Sunday
afternoon. (We live in MD, just inside the Beltway directly south of
Washington, DC.)
I called my friend in Marathon, Florida to laugh about how it's
usually HER having to weather the hurricanes... when Opal (I think it
was Opal!) went through a few years ago, she had taken off for Texas
and left their boat anchored out - and it survived, with minimal
dragging of the two anchors - but when they returned, their
liveaboard cat had apparently given birth to her kittens during the
storm! Mommy and kitties were all fine, though. :-)
