I've been a proud owner of two Swedish built yachts (a HR42 and a BSI
Farr Pilothouse 56) and cannot recommend them highly enough. Build
quality is superb, systems equipment placements are well thought out
and the performance is superior. I've only sailed a few times on
Beneteaus (or Bendy-Toys as my sailing friends refer to them as) and
haven't been impressed with the build quality or sailing performance.

Sure they are cheap(er), have high volume, and look nice when primped
up for the glossy brouchers or boat shows - but at the end of the day
they are mainly designed and built for benign conditions and family
oriented sailing in the Med / Carribbean charter fleets. The
majority of charter programmes are 5 yrs after which time they are
sold off and replaced with new boats. If you want something that is
more substantial, as your projected cruising area indicates, then go
for one of the names you suggest - especially if you want to go Blue
Water (just look at the manufacturers list in the ARC).

Also, you need to look at resale value when considering the relative
financial merits of these boats. The charter business off take
ensures that the manufacturers churn out large numbers of Bennetaus
yearly and the regular roll off means there are plenty of 5-6yr old
boats with nearly identical specifications premanantly depressing the
market - great for when you want to buy, but equally will make your
task of selling that much harder (and more costly). Of course prices
of boats vary with the circumstances of each buyer and seller, but my
own experiences have been positive for both of my Swedish built
vessels; sales were quick (inside of 2 months for both) and for very
close to what I paid for them in the first instance - and that
definitely made the math of being a boat owner much more palatable.
If you are on the S. Coast - drop into Hamble Point Marina and see
Transworld Yachts They are the main HR dealer for the UK and always
seem to have a good selection of vessels on offer - although turnover
    is pretty quick !

Finally, although I'm sure I've irritated a good number of Bendy Toy
owners out there (sorry about that), there are 1,000s of those boats
in the water successfully making all kinds passages in all kinds of
conditions and more importantly giving their owners a great amount of
pleasure. So, whatever boat you choose, have fun!
