I've had Raytheon, aka Raymarine, on my past three boats and have been
very happy with Raymarine products and ecstatic with Raymarine's
service. On my current boat I switched to B&G at the recommendation of
a dealer and it was no end of problems until I finally removed the
whole thing and purged B&G from my boat. I now have two Raymarine
RL80 Radar/Chartplotter displays, a RayNav300 WAAS GPS, and an older
Raytheon DGPS as backup, an Airmar NMEA depth/speed sensor, an AR NMEA
wind sensor, a Simrad Robertsen Autopilot and a PC. It all plays
together fine through a NMEA multiplexor.
My main problem with the B&G is that it's a monolith. If one part
fails, then the whole thing becomes flakey. This has not been my
experience with Raytheon. With my new setup I have a backup and
isolation for every part.
My approach is more for offshore cruising then racing. I want total
reliability more than fancy features. My own personal experience and
what I've heard in my travels tell me that Raymarine, Simrad
(autopilots) and Furuno (radars) are the most reliable brands. I
switched to a Simrad Robertsen autopilot, for example, because the
fishermen in Maine swear by them. My B&G used to do random 360 degree
turns every so often. My idea of a successful autopilot is one which
can take over the helm and keep on the same course regardless of the
conditions.
