Hello, Rick. Thanks for asking. The world has a funny way of
running into your keel when you think you're under way.
In order to fully explain our situation, it's necessary to first
provide a little background. Last year, our plans were to sell
everything, buy ourselves a quality used boat, and follow in the wake
of Suhaili, Prospector, and other notable vessels; We even postponed
having children to maximize our flexibility. Upon our return, we
were going to assume management of a family business in South Florida
and plan our next adventure.
Well, business grew rapidly in June, just when we launched Synergy
from the boatyard, and we were asked to step in and lend a hand.
Unfortunately (ironically) it hasn't slowed down since, and we
haven't done anything beneficial to our plans by contributing long
days and month-long stretches of consecutive effort to prod it
along. Long story short, we're limited to weekend getaways every so
often.
Our goal now is to stabilize the business and weigh anchor before we
turn 35. That gives us two years to accomplish a realistic goal.
With a little luck, we'll make it happen. At least we have Synergy
and can enjoy her when we have spare time. While hurricane season is
definitely a threat in Miami, w've prepared as well as we can and
found Synergy a very secure slip in the Miami River, where she's well
protected and sits in mostly fresh water. As you might imagine,
we're closely monitoring developments with Isabel.
Overall we haven't found any distressing problems with Synergy, at
least not since the overhaul. Our main concern is the aging Volvo
diesel that is going on 28 years. We have our troubles, don't get me
wrong, but they are mostly trivial matters like old batteries or
weathered sail covers. Our first true test of the boat will be in
October, when we plan to take off a few weeks to sail to the Keys.
So, that's it in a nutshell. We're still enthusiastic about
cruising, and very satisfied with Synergy. My wife and I sometimes
joke that if we have more than one kid, it's going to be tough
deciding who gets the keys to Synergy. But that's a bridge that we
won't have to cross for some time, so for now we're enjoying what we
can out of life.
Regards,
Louis
