[Baumgart, James] Personally, I wouldn't do it. Other people - experienced,
yes - make all your decisions. What equipment, when to leave, where to go.
Oddly enough, I was also anchored in Hampton Roads in 2000 and watched them
getting ready to go. It's a big event, that is true, and I'm sure it would
be fun to belong to the group. But they left on schedule, not when the
weather was good. We were there, part of the unofficial group watching on
the perimeter. I had met many of the boats/crews already on the way down -
plus hundreds of others not in the Rally. You will be part of a huge
unofficial support group already. Why pay $2500 for the privlidge of
joining a special club? Leaving in bad weather and "racing" to the US
Virgins? If you are at sea and start screaming Mayday, any one in the
vicinity is going to help if they can - part of the group or not.
If you don't like the ICW, jump offshore when there is a good window and
head to Miami. The Miami Bayside Marina is a great place to meet other
boats headed where you are going, or the Lake Worth anchorage, or anywhere
along that area. In Miami (or Ft. Lauderdale) you can easily buy 6 months
of food supplies and do repairs. We met about 4 boats leaving for the
Bahamas from Bayside and joined up with them. From that point on we were
always part of a 3 to 4 boat "fleet" no matter where we were headed. I made
all my own decisions, but could always find several boats from the dozens we
knew who were headed the same way. Hanging out with these crews was, in
fact, the most fun of the whole cruise.
