[worldcruising] going south for the winter

    Hello all...

As the summer draws to a close, I will be taking my boat south for the
winter, perhaps followed by a trip in Jan to the Azores and the Med. I
have some crew, but always welcome more. My boat is the sturdy, very
bluewater capable CS40 (not a CSY). It has a watermaker for the
doldrums :-) My own sailing experience stretches back 30 years - I
started racing dingies in 1973. I will be leaving from the Hamptons,
Long Island New York around Nov 1. The trip should take 2 to 4 weeks
total, including a stopover in Bermuda.

    A couple of questions...

Some of my friends with boats are either going to do the NARC rally or
the West Marine one (leaving Norfolk). Are these worth doing? I tend
to like the idea of having an informal support network as you cruise
bluewater (help via UHF for one thing), but can't see the value in
paying hundreds of dollars to do it. Why not just leave at the same
    time from the same place?

Any thoughts or prior experience with these things would be welcomed.
Contact me via email if you are interested in joining the whole or
part of the trip. I will be posting this on several of the Yahoo
sailing-related groups, so excuse me in advance for the repetition.
