Margo,
An outboard of the size for a dinghy _would_ be rather easy pickings
for thieves under most conditions aside from storing it below decks
with you. A really big outboard, say 75 hp, would _probably_ be heavy
enough to discourage most thieves working from an indigenous vessel
but perhaps not if working from a modern craft. A diesel outboard
must be still heavier. What size the outboard is that is in question,
I don't know. If it's 15 hp, it's probably well within the relatively
easy theft range. Even chaining it to the boat would not deter a
determined thief with good bolt cutters. Perhaps you would have to
weld the outboard to the boat and even then it might not preclude
missing parts or other damage because they couldn't steal the entire
unit. Of course, it all depends on the area, how determined the
thieves are, and how lucky you are. Actually, not even a good area is
a sure thing. Things get stolen even in the best of neighborhoods.
