[world-cruising] Saildrives (was: Diesel outboard ?)

    Hi Kerry,

Since you mentioned them, I have a question about saildrives that has
been "bugging" me for a long time. I know they are quite popular
especially outside the U.S. I've seen a few of them but I just can't
get past that huge hole in the bottom of the boat that is initially
cut then sealed in a way that it can be unsealed and resealed for
maintenance year after year; and I think the recommended maintenance
schedule is annual. What is the big attraction with saildrives? I
keep thinking they are, just like an accident waiting to happen, a
way to sink just waiting to open up. What am I missing in that
    evaluation?

    Rick
