Has anyone had experience with the diesel outboard motors? Yanmar
makes one as well as a couple of less well known companies. After
failing to find an affordable Prout we are looking at a couple of gas
outboard powered catamarans. We worry about the explosion factor of a
lot of gas aboard. Are we correct in thinking that diesel would
provide less chance of explosion
Diesal has almost no chance of explosion as you have to heat it to way above ambient temperatures to get explosive vapour off it. Unlike petrol which gives off vapour at normal air temperatures. Havn't the exact temps as havn't got my copy of tanker practice handy but something like 600deg C.
It can burn but you have to try quite hard. ie have a leak over the exhaust manifold, plus an ignition source
Can't tell you much about DIESAL OUTBOARDS however would expect the same problems of limited service life of any lightweight diesal. Because of the high compressions required, light weight and longevity do not go together with any diesal engine.
Having said that petrol outboards are as safe as your car if both the motor and tank are in the open air and reasonable precautions are taken.
Personally i would use the petrol outboards that come with the boat until they die of old age and then replace them with a saildrive.
Hope this is some help.
