The boat written about in the book "117 Days Adrift" was sunk off the
Galapagos by whale activity. The whale damaged the underbody - did not
breech and land on the deck/rigging like in this case. The boat sunk in a
matter of minutes. Many people bang pots and pans or start the engine to
keep whales at bay.
I had my own encounter recently. We were motorsailing about 20 nm offshore
and came across a 35 foot Basking Shark (that's 10 feet longer than my
Catalina 25). I shut the motor down and drifted in close for a good look.
All hands on deck - we were very excited. The shark was very interested in
the boat. He circled us, followed us and when he seemed interested in
nosing or rubbing against the rudder I got worried. We started the motor
and said good-bye to him. Still, to my crew, it was one of the most
memorable things in our many years at sea. I have a picture of him at
