.:.barnacles. How common is this? Has anyone seen a photo or video
.:.clip of the aftermath? I'd be curious to see what happened.
.:.
Of course, whales do this all the time to dislodge sea lice and barnacles,
as somebody else said. But they seldom do this near boats and when they
collide doing it, it's usually the boats fault (often unwittingly). The same
thing happened to a whale watching boat that for some reason turned off its
engine in Alaska a few years ago. The whale was breaching and couldn't hear
the engine. Several people said they thought the whale made movements to
try and avoid the boat while she was in the air, and nearly succeeded. But
a flipper killed one tourist and ripped the lifelines and some decking from
the side of the boat.
In this case, the folks were sailing and the whale didn't hear them. Some
people think that running their depth sounder is enough to alert whales to
their presence. Others turn on the stereo when they notice whale activity.
And some turn their engine on, just to be sure.
