I bought all my charts and cruising guides for my year long voyage in
    advance. I used Bluewater. http://www.bluewaterweb.com
    <http://www.bluewaterweb.com>

It's really hard to find them along the way. I was missing one - for Rice
Lake on the Trent-Severn canal and couldn't find that until AFTER we crossed
the lake. When the trip was over, I posted them for sale on a forum like
this and sold the whole batch - cruising guides, charts, and books for 1/2
my purchase price. Unless your eyes are good, get full size color charts.
I like the chartbooks. I did not bother with electronic charts - too
expensive and you need the paper charts anyways.

A method we used was to plot my intended route in pencil and advance a color
line using a yellow highlighter along the planned route everytime we passed
a bouy or other navaid and note the time in pencil on the chart when
    possible.

Since you are going to circumnavigate, I'd probably get charts to the
Marquesas or Tahiti. At those major cross roads you could probably trade
for where ever you are going from there.

I'm planning a circumnavigation originating form the west coast (USA).
Currently I am evaluating the chart options available. Any suggestions from
the group would be greatly appreciated. Specifically is it good to purchase
all charts from a known source before departing?, 2/3 or full size?. As
this can be an expensive endeavor all suggestions will be greatly
    appreciated

    Thank You
    Gerad
