This kind of "piggy backs" on the recent steel thread. One more thing
I want to really find out more info on in the next year is about
steel boats. Real info from the "horses mouth" as opposed to personal
opinion not based on fact. Some personal experience is also
appreciated though. Just, please, state the facts as they
apply/applied to you.
What I am looking for information on are the _real_ costs of
commissioning a new steel boat of about 38-40 feet on deck. Nothing
larger. Not looking for a fin keel version. _Only_ full keel, deep
bilge with tankage and stowage low. Would prefer a round bilge but
would like to know about any stability reasons for hard chines. So,
with that in mind, do you know of any _professional_ steel boat
builders in the U.S.? If so, I would like to contact them. Could use
Web site URL and email info in particular. Why professional? I will
need to learn to do welding if we get a steel boat and I have never
worked with metal and I want it done "right".
Should I not find anything in the steel realm, we will be choosing a
FRP/GRP full keel vessel. Probably double ended in the 36 to 38 foot
(preferred) range. Cutter or maybe a ketch. Since we are not quite as
thin as we once were and are getting a bit older we would like to
have the comfort that a larger boat will bring (Not to mention having
larger escape hatches.) but still keep the cost down as low as
possible. We expect to be able to cruise on a "medium" budget but
don't want to spend needlessly to have fun.
TIA
Rick
