Rick, your points about escape are well taken. My forward hatch is
encumbered with not only an inflatable (deflated) but the hard dinghy on
top of that. Hmmm, guess I'll have to rethink that.
But let's also consider the question of prevention. How could the boat
have been differently arranged so that the fire wouldn't have started, or
would have been earlier detected or more manageable? For example - as an
extreme 'what if' but one selected just to get creativity flowing - what
if the shore power connection were such that there was no hidden wiring.
Something like using an extension cord where you could see it full time?
Yeah, well that would probably work for a short while but I suspect that
chafe and wear-and-tear would quickly render it even less safe than the
other. So how about the other extreme: Should all my AC wiring be run in
metal conduit, so that incipient fires are contained and can't start
cooking the joinery? Worry about corrosion. What about plastic conduit?
No good it'll melt, defeats what you're trying to accomplish. What about
that armored flexi-conduit stuff, where the wire is encased in a sort of
metal wrinkle-belly....I believe it's called "BX" cable.
I would appreciate listening in on the thoughts of this group.
