First of all, thanks to both Harry and William for their replies.

In answer to a few points raised.

Primary power sources are envisioned to come from diesel
power, with a secondary source from solar power, and possibly
a tertiary source from a towed array (we are currently
investigating a product from a company called duogen in the UK
    - has gleaned some favourable write-ups in Yachting World -
have a look at www.duogen.co.uk). In terms of diesel power we
are looking at both a DC genset (sorry Will - I didn't make that
clear in my first post) and (naturally) alternators on the engines.
I don't want to be running the engines (unless underway) to
provide power generation, so the genset, as you point out, is a
    must.

My expectations of power output from renewable sources are
relatively modest. I'm hoping to maintain the refrigerators and
modest light usage with the power provided by the solar panels,
and I am expecting to run the genset at regular intervals to
recharge batteries if the nav instruments / entertainment
systems are being used regularly. I realise (for both AC and DC
systems) that I will have to run the genset for any Airconditioning
    use.

What I am looking at is a combined Genset and heating/cooling
system. Using a DC genset that directly powers a hydronic
(water based) system seems to be more efficient (in terms of
weight, power consumption, and space requirments), as well as
charging the (substantial) house battery bank. There are a
number of Gensets that drive dedicated water makers, but most
high quality watermakers come in 24V DC models anyhow.

I'll have a look at the wispergen - in the meantime we've looked
at a company out in California (I'm on the East Coast and the
boat is being built in South Africa) called Polar Power
(www.polarpowerinc.com) who import a variety of DC gensets
and direct DC powered equipment. If anyone is interested - I'll
post the results of my investigations.
