Actually, there are forward looking sonars that will work, though perhaps
not very well if you're sailing at hull speed toward something very hard and
fairly small.
But you'd have to believe that "semi-submerged containers" are really a
hazard. Only a guess, but I'd suspect that more sailboats are lost annually
to lightning strikes than to containers. While many containers are lost,
very few hang around the surface for long. They sink.
