These are things I'm afraid of too, but we could build a similar list of fears on land. i.e. bad guys breaking into the house, auto accidents, fire, etc. In every aspect of life there are potential dangers - land and sea. If we spent our early life on land, the dangers at sea seem more frightening because they are new. If we look at probabilities, we are far more likely to have an auto accident driving to the harbor than to have a submarine surface under us or be hit by a rogue wave. I think I read that we are more likely to be hit by lightning on land than to be attacked by a shark while swimming.
Most of us do not dwell on the dangers of fire and auto accidents because we are used to them. We learn not to spend our time considering every bad thing that might happen. When we take up sailing we have to learn to do this all over again with new fears. Like land, we also learn how to mitigate the dangers. We follow traffic rules, have smoke detectors. At sea we wear harnesses, have life rafts, pick good weather opportunities, stay away from submarine bases, etc.
The joys and wonder of the sea make this process worthwhile for many of us.
