My preference for off the shelf is Maui Jim's sunglasses. Good definition on
the water and come in various shades: smoke, yellow, amber, etc. Censuses is
the amber is the color of choice. Yellow can be great for ovcst or fog.
Orvis (the flyfishing catalog outfit) also has some good values. If you need
a prescription, many can add a Rx (some models, can't put a Rx, bifocals or
the variable ones without the line due to the extreme curvature). Probably
cheaper to go to an optician and have a pair made (esp bifocals) as you are
buying just the frame and the prescription glass whereas some of the off the
shelf ones you are buying the glasses, throwing away the glass and
installing the prescription (you don't see the 'throwing away part...just
paying for it!).
I finally broke down and got bifocals from an optician as I was putting on
my drug store half eyes over my sunglasses too much and it got to be a PIA.
They are great: polarized, amber, UV blocking and big enough glass to cover
my eyes and periphery. Don't worry too much about polarization in the
glasses and the instruments, it is only a factor when you read them with
your head cocked...at 90 degrees the instruments go black...it is most
valuable on the water and for fishing.
Second the warning on sunblock. I am paying the price now for prior 'sun
sins'...too much skiing and climbing...it wasn't cool to look like a raccoon
so no glasses. Had to look 'healthy' so no sunblock. Both (glasses and
sunblock) are important.
