I have a CB that retracts into the keel to give me 4' draft.
It improves windward ability when down in light airs but if the wind gets more than 30 kt. It is hard to hold enough sail up to push against the big sea.
The shallow draft is good for cruising but I would prefer next boat to have more draft to help in rough seas. All my previous boats have been deep draft.

In the hopes of not in-sighting World War lll, I would like to get some
feedback on retractable centerboards for Bluewater Cruisers. I see the
benefit of being able to gunkhole in shallower waters, but what about
sailing characteristics and the obvious fear of mechanical failures?
