Gary,

I've seen a Tartan 37 centerboard that circumnavigated. The board's pivot
pin was badly worn and had to be replaced.

Shannon has been building durable cruisers for years with centerboards. If
you talk to the Shannon people, they will argue strongly that centerboards
are perfectly OK on cruising boats.

My major concern it that unless they can be locked in the down position,
they tend to "bounce" in a seaway...over time, something will fail - the
pin, the pennant, or the trunk.
