All boats require maintenance. The smaller the boat, the less the
maintenance (and the less parts cost collectively and absolutely). Also, the
fewer the systems onboard, the less the maintenance.
Generally, engines break a lot, then reefers, then sails and rigging. If you
have no reefer (just an ice box), you have no maintenance issues with a
reefer. And so on ... and so on ... and so on ...
In other words, a floating seaside home costs more to maintain than a
seagoing sailboat.
You're in the UK. A Westerly 26 can be had quite cheaply (less than the
price of rebuilding the engine in a typical 40 footer) and is more than up
for going anywhere.
