It is axiomatic that steel boats rust from the inside, and, as Bryan noted,
most steel boats are homebuilt, so construction standards, experience and
forethought about such things is not always built in. I'd not rule out steel
(or aluminum), but it's the stuff in the hidden areas that will end up
getting you. I've never seen a 10 year old steel boat without rust stains
(unless it was freshly painted to hide them before the sale).
OTOH, they're easy to keep water tight; if you've got some welding skills,
they're easy to add cleats or such to; and they're usually very strong.
