Hi Rick B.,
I think Rick Kennerly's comments were right on. It might be a little early
for your friend to subscribe to Good Old Boat, but the magazine is a great
way to learn about older boats and how to fix and upgrade them.
One of the reasons I subscribe to Good Old Boat is because they have very
few "puff pieces". Most of their articles are very practical "how to fix
this or that" pieces or reviews of good old boats. Many of the articles are
quite long and detailed. For example, a few issues ago they had an excellent
detailed article on building your own watermaker. It included specific
recommendations on exactly what parts to order and how much they would cost
you (I am thinking about doing it--comments welcome!). The magazine is a
little like Practical Sailor in that it definately has an air of
independent-ism, but they don't do nearly as many reviews/comparisons as PS
does. More focused on "how to do it" articles in my opinion.
I am obviusly a fan of this magazine... I do have to disclose that I am a
little biased... my boat was on the cover of the May 2002 issue;-)
Best-Tim

Subject: [world-cruising] Question about a magazine
A friend of mine who doesn't own a computer so isn't online is
thinking about going from a dinghy to a "reasonable" older cruising
sailboat, selling the house, and retiring; just he and his wife. He
asked me if I knew anything about "Good Old Boat" magazine. I told
him I had heard the name but hadn't seen or looked for it. Thought I
might run it by you people to see what you all thought about the
publication given that I've heard it is a bit on the expensive side
and only comes out about 6, or so. times a year.
If you subscribe to it, is it worth the cost (whatever it is.)? Would
you subscribe again?
How does it compare to pubs like "Blue Water Sailing," Cruising
World," "Practical Sailor." and "Latitudes and Attitudes"?
Will it give him the "low down" on the problems as well as the good
things with older boats or does it contain more "puff pieces" from
the manufactures than good information about older boats?
Anything else that would recommend it to be on the reading list?
TIA. I'll print out and give him all the info that comes in.
Rick
