I concur with that advice. The slick magazines today are largely a waste of
money; their articles are repetitive. You can get the same information
online at sailnet. Practical Sailor is good information if you're buying
equipment and need to decide among brands. Of course, products change so
quickly, it's almost impossible to find a review of current equipment for
the items you're considering.
When it gets time to select among boats, Sailnet also has email lists of
specific brands. You can search archives and read messages without joining.
You'll learn a lot more about a boat and its qualities from a boat owner
than you ever will from a reviewer. I've been aboard boats with reviewers;
generally, they spend a couple of hours, do very little sailing, and their
magazine reviews are often inadequate.
