Unless you have unlimited funds and unlimited space, I suggest you do
this:
1) Inventory what you currently have - categories such as ground
tackle, rigging, sails, navigation equipment etc.
2) Assess the remaining useful life of what you have.
3) Prioritize replacements of what you have. (if you have a good
survey from buying the boat, this is a good place to start.)
4) Estimate (use the Defender website) what you really have to buy
first and make yourself a budget/timeline.
5) When you go to the Marine Store to shop for something specific,
either take a shopping monitor (such as a wife), or do not take any
more money than you actually have to spend. [There's an amusing
article about this in "Chesapeake Bay Magazine" this month - he writes
down exactly what he needs at the store and SHE goes in to buy it.]
We had ground tackle upgrade as one of our first priorities for
instance as we felt that our anchor was inadequate, there was little
or no chain rode, which we though was important to have, and the
windlass was just a ball of rust. We thought we could get by with the
sails for the present, but the bimini top was falling to pieces. We
also had very worn jib sheets and the dinghy was stored on the deck
where I couldn't see over it to steer and Bob didn't want to tow it.
So the first things we did were dinghy davits, replace the jib sheet,
replace the bimini, buy a used windlass, anchor chain and buy/trade
and sell anchors.
We had bought a GPS before we got the boat, and we didn't get into
computer charts, or autopilot or radar or anything like that until
we'd had the boat a couple of years.
