You're swinging to an extreme, Susi. Living a life afloat is a rich and
nearly communal kind of existence where community is the key word. If tied
to a dock, you'll see more of your neighbors than you do in a neighborhood
because you and they are out in the cockpit all the time. It's more like
living in the era before air conditioning where everybody sat on the porch
in the evening and visited around.

Somebody's always hosting drinks, or a BBQ, or a shopping trip. If at
anchor, you'll spend a lot of time with others anchored out, rounds of boat
visiting by dinghy are common in the evening, people stopping by to see if
you need anything from the store since they're going anyway. If on the move
during migration season (the turn of seasons between winter and summer and
vise versa), you travel in an ever changing pack of boats up and down the
waterway, looking out for each other, ganging up for dinner at the evening's
stop, helping out with bum pump.

If you're cruising with the seasons, not tied to a location by a day-to-day
job, the weather's almost always temperate and you cockpit will become your
living room. You'll be outside more than you are now probably. If it's a
bit hot, swim off the boat. I've known people who've had to go anchor off
in a corner by themselves, just to get a bit of solitude.

The only long stretches of solitude you'll find is during long passage
making. But then you're outside all the time, too.
