I absolutely *love* to stay onboard my boat in the rain (even as a 16 year
old kid I loved to be in my car in the rain), but living on a boat is not
staying onboard and buttoned up inside all day long. However, do understand
that even a large, say 65 foot, boat is teeny tiny itzy bitsy compared to
even a New York City apartment.
Everyone I've talked to about how to handle the confined space of a
liveaboard boat tells that they by intent or by accident learned to allocate
a defined "space" for each member of the couple wherein each could feel alone
and even isolated. Usually, the woman claimed to have originated the idea
and if that is true the man adopted the idea immediately. All successful
cruising couples had this idea of "space".
That said, your boat is not the limit of your universe. A dinghy ride to
shore opens up all the avenues of exploration available on land. Not
uncommon is that cruising boats carry two dinghies (if so, nearly always one
inflatable and one hard dinghy).
Changing perspective for moment, many couples successfully "land cruise" on
motorcycles (as close together as two people can be in public) without
interfering with either's sense of space, while other couples are at each
other's throats in less than a week in a 45 foot RV.
You might be interested in the viewpoint of the Pardey's. They have cruised
for over 35 years on two small boats, neither of which is even 30 feet long.
Their books make interesting reading.
