Since you are near the left coast, try to get copies of the following
monthly publications which are usually free at a marine store.
Latitude 38 (They have a web site) is published in the Bay area, Santana
is published in SoCal, & 48 North is published in Seattle area.
These are basically "rags" (news print) that do a much better job
providing info about cruising, sailing, etc, than the East Coast slicks
that run the Rolex ads.
Also, find the nearest US Power Squadron facility that offers their basic
boating safety course.
