Hi, you have so many questions I think most people on this list won't know
where to start. I'll make some suggestions.
(1) Get the books by Herb Payson, "Blown Away", "You Can't Blow Home Again"
and "Advice for the Sealorn". The first two are like novels about their
cruise to the South Pacific and the last is an advice book. These books are
how I got started. To learn about my cruise, click on
www.indiscipline.org <http://www.indiscipline.org> and Click on Cruise
2000 to travel from Milwaukee to Florida and Cruise 2001 fro Florida to the
Bahamas and back. Then click on "CJs Log" to read my book and learn all
about what we did to get started. I suggest you start with coastal
cruising, as well, like we did, to learn if you like this life. Probably
you should also subscribe to "Cruising World" magazine.
We live in Nevada, so we dont have access to boating classes, and we
are clueless about everything! We dont even know what size boat to be
researching, if we should be new or used, etc.
[Baumgart, James]
Look for a solid used cruising boat in the 34 to 37 foot range (for a
couple). Everything else depends on where you are going. To cross the
atlantic it should probably be a full keel or 3/4 modified full keel boat.
It you don't know what this means, you have a lot of reading to do.
Also, I am pretty addicted to the internet, is there a way to get
internet access in the middle of the ocean? Is it expensive?
[Baumgart, James] I don't really think so. Get a cell phone modem for your
laptop you can use this near the US shore. Get a pocketmail for places far
away from the US. Yo can also look into sailmail for your Ham radio. But
you will have to get used to life without these things.
I do take a lot of prescription medications. If we did this we would
be without medical insurance, and would not be in the same place for
very long, how would I go about getting the medications I would need?
[Baumgart, James]
You need a "home agent". This person will receive your mail, discard the
junk, and get your prescriptions and Fed X these to where you project to be.
You can work this out with your doctor in advance. I got 90 day supplies of
all my meds and never had any problem receiving them. Do NOT use any
service EXCEPT FED-X.
I am reading one book now, and it mentions "keeping watch" at night,
but does not go into how or why. Would my husband and I have to
sleep at different times? He read about Pirates and is worried about
that. Is there a way to avoid them? Are there a lot of Pirates out
there?
[Baumgart, James] Keeping watch is steering, managing sails, and navigation
chores when you are underway. Someone needs to be on duty at all times to
prevent collision. Usually in a 2 hour shift. When underway, you and your
husband will rarely even see each other. On the other hand, being underway
on a long opvernight passage is rare (we never had to do it on our year long
cruise).
I have TONS of questions, as you can see, and I am anxious to learn
all I can.
[Baumgart, James]
Read everything you can. Go to sailnet ( www.sailnet.com
<http://www.sailnet.com> ) and join the cruising forums. Use
www.yachtworld.com <http://www.yachtworld.com> to start looking for a
cruising boat. Since you live in Nevada you should buy the boat in Florida,
do the necessary repairs, and leave from there. I would hire a professional
captain to teach you the ropes for the first month or so.
Thank you.
