at anchor you can use any number of antennas, such as the long wires already
described. Also hoisting a dipole is an option. For use underway, however,
I'd think them less than useful. I'd certainly consider a commercial FRG
coiled antenna such as the Hustler, Outback, or Spyder. They are all
considerably shorter than the long whip you describe and, although you have
to move a wire contact or switch out a coil at the antenna to change bands,
not all that difficult to use in reality. Probably 90% of all radio work is
done in a very narrow range of bands by most cruisers.

For rx, you wouldn't have to change anything as they're all pretty tolerant
and sensitive in RX only operations.
