No!

We had a great time on my 2000 - 2001 year long cruise from the Great Lakes
to Georgetown in the Bahamas. Places like the North Channel, the Bustards
(Lake Huron), and the Thousand Islands (Lake Ontario) offer great cruising -
wonderful villages with friendly people and secluded, sheltered, anchorages.
You can have a beach campfire every night with a dozen cruising crews or be
the only one in a remote anchorage picking blueberries all day. We "gave"
an island to our two girls. They named it Gary Island. We would dingy them
over in the morning and pick them up in the evening. It will always be a
special place in our hearts. Plus the ICW south in the winter was a load of
fun as we bonded with so many boats and crews. All of this is right here in
North America.

In the Bahamas, it was easy to find the remote, secluded spots. However, I
found that it was a lot more fun travelling with all of our buddy boats.
One of the memorable nights was at Little Farmers Cay when we made a pizza
and toook it over to have a party on the biggest power boat in the
anchorage. They had Direct TV. What a treat! However, once we all got
there, it didn't work. No matter, it was a great party anyways. The boat
was big enough to have a dance in the salon! (The skipper was considering
returning to the US to get his TV fixed before continuing).

Yes, the Bahamian people on the remote islands were trying very hard to make
a living off the passing cruising boats, and Georgetown and Nassau were very
crowded. Yet food, supplies and repairs were readily available at those
places. We were, however, the only boat in the Berrys. If you get just 5
or 10 miles off the "beaten path" you will be alone. Shallow draft helps in
this regard. I thought solitude is what I wanted, but once we got out there
I was very nervous if we were the only boat in the anchorage.

my log. Plus pictures of Indiscipline III our new Catalina 25.

I don't think so, but you may have to go to some new places. Ten years ago
I think it was the Caribbean and Europe. Now it seems to be the Far East.
You can still cruise the Caribbean for sure just not the way it was ten
years ago. More expensive. More crowded. More violence. Still some nice
spots though. Belize comes to mind.

More a state of mind I think.

I love to sail and have been planning my world cruise for a few years
now. The more I read and learn, and the more I talk to old salts, it
seems that I've missed the heyday of cruising. Are the quiet,
secluded anchorages really gone? I'm more than a bit of a hermit,
and the thought of endless crowded marinas and coves upsets me. I
love blue water passages, but would have difficulty cruising just for
that reason. What's the status of cruising life compared to 20 years
ago? Any speculation as to what it will be like 10 years from now?
