Doug:
My boat, an Ohlson38, was built and documented in England in 1970. The
previous owner bought it in the U.K. in 1986 and had it re-documented in
the US. There are some legal papers that were notarized by the US Consulate
in London. Superficially, it sounds relatively simple. I do not know if
there were any import duties or other fees involved. If you live in New
York State, you will have to pay local sales tax on the price you paid,
whether you document it or just register it.
Any chance of moving the boat to one of the Dutch islands, so the sale
would be straightforward from Dutch to American ownership?
This is the website of the Coast Guard's National Vessel Documentation
Center, http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-m/vdoc/nvdc.htm. I have found them
pleasant and responsive in the past.
This page describes Dutch ship registry (in Dutch, no English available),
http://www.son.nl/paginas/nederlandsregistratie.html and gives some useful
information:
"Bij registratie van een boot bij het Kadaster, wordt een onuitwisbare
registratie aangebracht, het zgn. brandmerk. Dit brandmerk bestaat uit een
volgnummer van de teboekstelling, een afkorting van de rubriek, het kantoor
van teboekstelling en het jaartal: bijvoorbeeld 1751 BR 1990. (B van
binnenvaart, R van Rotterdam)."
Roughly translated: "By registering a boat in the Registry [Kadaster], an
indelible registration is applied, the so-called brand. The brand consists
of a sequential number, an abbreviation of the category, the office of
registry and the year: for example 1751 BR 1990 (B for internal waters, R
for Rotterdam)."
It does not state where the number is located, but if it has a number like
this you have something to go on. (On my boat the English documentation
number is way forward in the bow, and the US number is in a starboard
hanging locker. You can't miss, as the numbers are 3" or 4" tall.)
This appears to be the page to ask about Dutch registry:
http://www.kadaster.nl/activiteiten/index.html. There is an English
language link in the upper left-hand corner, but it switches to other
information--which may be interesting in itself.
