Subject: [world-cruising] High lattitude paradise

I read with great interest Annie Hill's descriptions of sailing to the
Falkland Islands in her book "Brazil and Beyond". The people there sounded
interesting, friendly and hospitable. I've also read Len Sherman's book
about sailing a small steel sailboat through Canada's Northwest Passage,
called "Arctic Odyssey". There is something about high (or low) lattitude
cruises which in my mind captures the essence of adventure. Sure, it isn't
palm trees and warm breezes, but if you don't mind the cold and a few bits
of ice, there are certain aspects about it, in this increasingly crowded and
developed world, which I'd call paradise: the lack of people (except those
hardy enough to live there or cruise there), and the relatively pristine
surroundings. The cold and dodgy weather will always keep it pretty empty
in the near future, barring global warming...
I definitely think paradise is what you make of it.
