RE: [world-cruising] Did I Miss the Cruising Heyday?

I'd refer you to Alec Waugh, brother of the better known Evelyn Waugh, and
author of The Colored Countries. After WW I he traveled the SoPac and much
of Asia aboard tramp steamers and constantly carped about how paradise had
been spoiled, if not lost.

He described how beautiful Polynesian girls sang mournful songs about how
they wanted to be like the glamorous French women they saw at the cinema;
how nearly naked island teens would hop into parked convertibles and
pretended to be living the good life of booze, long cigarette holders, and
jazz music; and he moaned about the loss of nature as steam replaced sail in
the interisland business.

So buck up. Paradise, according to Waugh, was lost long before we graced
the earth. Or, in other words, it's up to you to find or make your own
paradise. There are plenty of wild, lonely places left. Just be prepared
for the genuine hardship and abject poverty that goes along with them.

Frankly, I've always resisted the idea of island life frozen like a bug in
amber for the reenactment of my personal white male cruising fantasy, and of
islanders as caged attractions trapped in some sort of moted zoo for us
well-to-do western tourists to float past and gawk at.

.:.I love to sail and have been planning my world cruise for a few years
.:.now. The more I read and learn, and the more I talk to old salts, it
.:.seems that I've missed the heyday of cruising. Are the quiet,
.:.secluded anchorages really gone? I'm more than a bit of a hermit,
.:.and the thought of endless crowded marinas and coves upsets me. I
.:.love blue water passages, but would have difficulty cruising just for
.:.that reason. What's the status of cruising life compared to 20 years
.:.ago? Any speculation as to what it will be like 10 years from now?
