[world-cruising] Boat buying in foreign lands

Subject: [world-cruising] Boat buying in foreign lands

Anyone have any experience with buying a foreign-flagged vessel in
another country? One of the boats that my wife and I have our eye on is
in Grenada with Dutch registry, being sold by a broker in St. Maarten.
The broker seems pretty reputable, so I'm not too worried about that. I
plan to survey that boat up one side and down the other, and probably
pop for a diesel mechanic and rigger, too.

So I'm mystified about a title search. How can I get solid proof that
these folks really own the boat?

Also, what about documentation? Would I have to temporarily have to get
Grenadian or St. Maarten title, then xfer it to the USA? Or somehow do
USCG documentation remotely?

Thanks in advance,

Doug Barnard
