You idea has a problem. Propane is not always readily available and cost
money. 12v refrigerator can get its power from wind or sun. Also same
solar panels or wind gen can supply for radios etc. I think 12v system
will be much smaller.

Hi folks! Just delurking for a moment to ask a question that I've
wondered about, namely one about refrigeration.

I'm not yet cruising, but things are headed that way and the plans
have gotten to the point where I am thinking about making stuff cold.
After a GREAT deal of research I've decided that I'd like to know what
  other people are doing :)

It seems to me that a reverse cycle ammonia system would be the
absolute best way to go, since I can power it with propane (or really
anything that burns). Since I can get lots more stored energy in
flammable gas/liquids than I can get via the sun/wind, and potentially
more cheaply, and certainly more reliably (in a salt water
environment) than an eletrically driven compression system I have
currently thought to go with this sort of system. There is also the
advantage that I can probably find a small industrial/commercial
system like this for cheap money and 'Marinize' it. Essentially, this
system would be making a block of freshwater ice for me in a well
insulated box, which I would break out and use in my icebox for
refrigeration. I will have no freezer, or if I do it will be very
small. (like 1 cubic foot). Considering my thrifty ways, both units
  will be top loading.

  So, on to the question:

What do you folks think is -the- way to go for refrigeration? There
are many strategies and methods, but I was wondering what you folks
out in the real world are using.

  Thanks in advance!
