Subject: RE: [world-cruising] How To Determine If Yacht is Blue Water Wort hy

Hi, I am the power boat cruiser converting to sail. We are currently making
an offer on a 1977 fixed keel Catalina 25. I know it's not a blue water
cruising boat. We have to learn to sail and want to go to Catalina, coastal
cruising, and near shore fishing in good weather. It the smallest boat that
meets my requirements and that we can afford - we are resisting the tendancy
to buy the largest boat you can afford.
Here are the numbers on the Catalina 25 from the seaworthiness calculation
that was posted:
Catalina 25 Fixed Keel
Length 25 feet
Length on Waterline 22 feet
Displacement 4550 lbs
Sail Area 271 square feet
Results
Capsize Ratio 1.93 anything under 2 is
considered good
Sail to Displacement Ratio 15.79 a racer would be over 18, 15 is the
middle of the road for cruisers
Displacement to Length 191 a seaworthy boat should be around
200
Length to Beam 2.76 a seaworthy boat should be
around 2.7
Motion Comfort 19.10 Westsail 32 was 43.61
Weight required to float the boat 1 inch lower 629 lbs
(Westsail 32 was 1064)
By the way, here are the specifications on the boat we are buying. I have
looked at over 20 sailboats - most floating death traps in miserable
condition. This one is primo.
1977 Catalina 25 pop-top, fin keel
traditional interior (what we prefer over the dinette)
propane stove for galley, plus propane barbeque
porti-potty (what we prefer)
keel bolts all looked good
new stainless standing rigging in 2002, tuning seemed fine.
bottom ground down and 4 coats of epoxy in 2000 (owner had extensive photos
of this big project)
8 HP Honda long shaft 4 stroke with alternator (4 years old) - started on
the 2nd pull!
new stainless, oversized motor mount (rated for 15 HP)
new rudder, oversize pintles and gudgeons - like new
chainplates replaced in 2001
no signs of leaks and not a drop of water in the boat
owner has new seals for the windows which have not been installed yet.
2 Danforth anchors, chain and 200 ft 3/8 line (each)
new pulpit in 2001
Shaffer roller furling
5 sails - 110, 135 and 150 genoa, spinnaker and pole. (The 135 is on the
roller)
new main from North sails in 1997
all sails looked in good to excellent condition
twin headstays
adjustable backstay
all running rigging looks new (no more than 1 to 2 years old)
2 speed self tailing winches (in addition to cabintop winches)
all lines led aft, plenty of jam cleats, etc.
2 gel type group 27 house batteries - like new condition
battery charger / shore power
little vinyl tent from Catalina Direct that goes over the pop-top, in
perfect condition.
VHF
GPS
Stereo
knotmeter
tiller pilot (does work)
depthfinder (does not work)
Man overboard pole and horseshoe float
Owner is sailing with me to deliver Long Beach to Dana Point so I get a free
coastal sailing lesson. Defects : salon cushions in bad condition, gate
valves used on the 2 through hulls. This is going to be a big change for us
from 39 through hulls down to 2, 2 diesel mains, cruising at 14 knots,
generator, all electric galley, TV, VCR, video games, 2 laptops, etc. etc.
