I'm researching Beneteaus right now, and am probably going to wind up
purchasing a First 38. The French are a bit more organized about the
seaworthy thing than the rest of the world. The First 38, for example,
has a Category 1 certificate (unrestricted offshore use). You can
probably research your boat's particulars through a Beneteau dealer, or
from the factory.
That would tell you the boat's intended use- as to the suitability of
your particular boat, why not pop for a survey? Personally, I consider
peace of mind something worth paying for. I'd much rather be musing
wistfully over a cool drink in the tropics about being over-cautious,
rather than praying fervently in a terrifying situation that I'd been
more cautious!
