[world-cruising] Trading in the islands and S. America

I have this great opportunity. I get to sail aboard my uncle's ship
from New Orleans, down the coast of Mexico to Central America – Costa
Rica to be specific, then back as a newbie deck hand.

He is loading up a little extra ballast on the way down. He'll dump
that and take on a few thousand kilos of coffee for a friend in the
states that owns a small chain of coffee shops. He is also planning
on picking up a dozen or so cases of tequila in Mexico.

No, he doesn't make a living at this - he's retired - but it does
suppliment his cruising expenses.

The question I have is about the ballast. He said that if I could
come up with something – anything – that we could buy cheaper in the
states than down there, and that we could trade once we get there, we
could take that instead of the regular ballast. (so long as we
aren't violating any trade laws of course.)

So…. Who has a good idea? Anyone?
