Subject: RE: [world-cruising] Xapic's Virgin Island Adventure

Rick's email about the Virgin Islands brought to mind a story I saw on TV
this weekend on the Discovery Channel. It was the true story of the storms
that sank the Andrea Gail and so brought about the book and movie named "The
Perfect Storm". What was very interesting about the story was the actual
footage of the sailboat rescue that was featured. It was a Westsail 32.
The Coast Guard film shot from the chopper showed a boat that was flying a
reefed storm jib in 60 knot or greater winds with (in my estimation) 50 foot
seas - nearly mast height. The seas were not "breaking" but the tops were
being blown off in streams of foam. The ocean looked like a living thing -
a heaving monster. Although I'm sure it was a terrifying ordeal on board,
the ship seemed to be riding fairly well. It didn't appear to be ever in
danger of a knockdown and the rolling was moderate.
The story of the boat owner is written and can be viewed on the Westsail
page. He didn't wish to be taken off but was so ordered by the Coast Guard.
A few days later the boat washed up on the Maryland shore, was salvaged by
the owner, and sailed to Florida for repairs.
My wife - who is justifably terrified of large storms at sea - fell in love
with the boat after seeing those films.
