Yikes, okay, I'm ducking! LOL!! -- Goodness, did I at any time suggest one
shouldn't take responsibility for oneself, or should rely entirely on the
coast guard? (If so, whip me with wet noodles! <gg>) -- Of *course*, it is
taken as read (shouldn't even have to be said!) - all safety precautions
should be in place and if you aren't responsible you shouldn't be out there
in a boat (and yes, I was talking about coastal cruising, thanks for
separating the two issues) - and I include "drinking and driving" at the top
of that list - if you are a drinker, don't do it on the water because you're
risking OTHER peoples' safety, yet it seems that's one of the biggest safety
problems out on the water, inland or coastal, just like on the roads.

The point I was trying to make is that IMO, having your government
interested in your flight plan too, gives that "extra edge" - especially if
you are going to another country - *in my opinion*. But then, here in
Africa, the "other countries" in easy reach generally have very dicey safety
precautions and rescue systems, and a tendency toward piracy or just plain
crime in general, so I guess the SA harbourmaster likes to know if he may
have to call in the SA Defence Force (who act as our "coast guard) to help
you out when a neighbour is lacking, LOL!!!

Re the size of the country, aren't you proportionally just as well
represented in coast guard and harbour staff, if not better? I would be
surprised if that isn't the case.

From the way you guys have put it, it seems the USA has a lot more
irresponsible boaters than we do out here, but perhaps that really is by
weight of sheer numbers, as you say. :-) Of course, things like "Most
Amazing" programs do tend to give one the impression that the Aussies and
Americans vie for tops! LOL!!! (TIC!!)

Everyone's comments are noted and good points were made, if a little
caustically by some. I hope my own are taken with the humour intended. If I
offended anyone in either post, I apologise - tone of voice is difficult in
an email. I will try to include more "expressions" ... :-)

Best,
Jodie Holloway (South Africa)
