David,
I visited Galapagos last year on board of an old 36 footer sloop. It is a
wonderful place, don’t miss it if you are sailing in the south Pacific.
You can anchor in one of two anchorages: the Academy Bay and the Wreck Bay.
I anchored in the Academy Bay, which is not as good as the Wreck bay, but
closer to the administrative center and the international airport. If you
decide to use the Academy Bay, don’t anchor in the western part; it may be
very uncomfortable, even dangerous on a swelly day.
The formalities are much easier than what is described in the cruising
books. When arriving, you have to visit first the port capitan’s office and
then the immigration police. In fact the length of staying is not limited,
but when you leave, you will pay the anchorage fee per day, which is not
cheap. The immigration police take $20 per person for entry and the same
when you leave.
It is prohibited to cruise between the islands with your yacht except if you
take a (very expensive) local guide; you can book daily tours in the local
tourist offices. Everybody leave the boat unattended, but closed, for
one-two days.
Don’t worry about fuel and water; local boats supply both to the yacht.
In Puerto Ayoro there is a small supermarket that can provide you with
simple products.
The ATM machine accepts only a few credit cards (I don’t remember which) and
to change money in the bank may be a few hours project, but you can pay with
dollars everywhere.
To sum it up: you don’t need any agent; the procedures are simple, but not
cheap.
If you need more information, don’t hesitate to contact me.
