Subject: [worldcruising] Windvane on catamaran

Hello all,
I am currently studying on what the new boat will be. In Europe, we all think
monohull mainly because multihulls get too expensive in harbour, and there
are practically no other possibilities to put them. (f.y.i: in my former home
port Oostende the reasoning is simple: Harbour dues are based on length. 1
hull: once the price, 2 hulls: twice the price, 3 hulls: trice the price.
Another example of the KISS priciple !)
But nonetheless, I want to consider a catamaran. Especially the Wharham
designs carry my interest due to their simpleness.
Apart from the harbour issue, there is -I think- another drawback to
multihulls: they don't handle as well under wind vane self steering due to
their speed. I wonder wether anyone on the list has any experience on this
topic, and I would like to hear from it, as I have no first-hand information
on that.
Do note that I want to hear about windvanes, in other words: the mechanical
devices. I'm not interested in electronic steering, I know that works as long
as the batteries are filled - which is another problem. I want my boat to be
fully operational without electricity - that is considered an added bonus.
