A buddy of mine has a Cheoy Lee Offshore 27 that he keeps down in King
Harbor, Redondo Beach. It's a dandy little boat, fun to sail and not too
much trouble to keep. He's taken it out to Catalina a least twice that I
know of.

As to the exploration of Bay of LA, maybe try a kayak? I've gone on
trips to Baja with Ed Gillet, formerly of South West Kayaks. I don't
know his current whereabouts. You can self-guide in the Bay of LA, it's
a great spot. Not bad for windsurfing off of Punta La Gringa, either.
When I was there last Thanksgiving, gas was available at the bay, but
not at the La Pinta, in the desert.
