I too, went through the trailerable search 12 years ago. I looked at the 22 footers (Chrysler, Catalina etc.) and decided they were too cramped and really not suitable for Great Lake (or ocean) sailing. In order to trailer without a wide load permit, the overall width must be less than 8 1/2 feet. I then looked for the most seaworthy design I could find. The Norsea 27 stood out as the best. The cheapest beater I could find was still over $25k ! So much for that. I found a C&C 25 Mark 1 in great shape with a new Westerbeke 10 Two engine for a tad over $12k. I then built an over the road trailer that will track like an arrow at 65mph. We have sailed it comfortably on Lake Superior for 11 years. It is great for a couple for a week and four for a daysail or weekend, but gets expotentially smaller with time.

We now own a Nauticat 40 for extended cruising on the Great Lakes, but kept the C&C 25 for winter escapes to the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. (Poor man one boat, damn poor man two boats.)

I consider the heavy (2200# lead fixed keel) 25 a _minimum_ boat for any blue water. I have been caught out in 50 knot blasts with discomfort but little danger. (A nearby McGregor was knocked down). While it's possible to launch and retrieve the boat from the trailer and step and unstep the mast with two people, I prefer to have a yard do it with a travel lift. The safety and comfort is worth the $150 or so to me. I therefore do not recommend moving it unless you have a couple weeks to sail.

I think the smaller trailerables should be limited to inland or nearshore waters and you should charter for the short times.
