I've been lurking while this thread has been running and I feel compelled to
give you my thoughts, since I had gone through the same dilemma years
ago.The adage that sailboats are a series of compromises, surely fits this
line of discussion. I really believe that a cruising sailboat in order to
sustain a minimum life style for 4 people starts at about 25-30'.
Anything less would be too uncomfortable to bear for more than a weekend. I
started sailing with a 25' traditional designed boat and a young family of
4. If it wasn't for the fact that I was madly in love with sailing, the
experience of sailing with two kids on a boat that I could not stand up in
to pull on a pair of shorts would have driven me out of sailing not to
mention my mind. I moved up to a 31' traditional design and the world
changed for me and sailing became a joy for the entire family.
Now that I am older and wiser and sail a 36', there seems to be room for
only 2 people for anything more than a weekend. I'm planning to move aboard
in the next few years and a 40-45' makes more sense to me, if I can afford
it.
So if I were in your position, I would charter a boat that is the largest
you can afford to buy and spend a week sailing with your entire crew before
you commit to a purchase. Even with the optimism of a novice, you will soon
find your level.
Good luck and fair winds,
