James,
I'd suggest you take a short trip to see and experience a WestWight
Potter for yourself. Not having been on one "up close and personal"
only at a distance, I can't say for sure but I doubt it would support
4 people in the style most people would like to become accustomed. In
order to get the overnight capability and be comfortable, especially
if anyone is 6 feet tall or more, I think you may well have to go to
25 to 30 feet perhaps more. The trailerable aspect is the kicker
though. A Pacific Seacraft Flicka is trailerable and would be a good
boat for 2 but is _well_above_ the $9K mark. Same for the Norsea.
I've seen Coronado 23s that could handle a cramped overnight, in fact
I've seen a couple that were lived aboard or weekended aboard, and are
inexpensive. If you don't want to stand up straight or are 6 feet or
more it may be a problem.
If $9K is your budget, it's going to be tough. I agree that a
Macgregor might fit the bill. It is small, trailerable, and is also
built in So. CA. It's just not a blue water boat.
Getting what you want _and_ maintaining a degree of comfort might
well difficult if not impossible. I think comfort is an important
factor. Too uncomfortable and you might well loose your crew before
the next big trip.
Good luck and keep us posted about what you find. There may be others
who would be interested in the same information.
Rick
