I am just looking at the adds in "Voiles et Voiliers", a well known french
sailing magazine. You can have an Arpège (31 ft - 1968 - french fibreglass
"standard" boat for ocean cruising) for about 18.000 Euro. I would consider
15.000 Euro a minimum for an old but sound 31 ft yacht. And I would not go
smaller, if you want to have a little comfort with two persons on board. In
my opinion, in Europe France is the best place to look for a second hand
yacht. Other countries seem to be more expensive. But then, those other
countries are more northerly, and tend to build stronger "North Sea Approved"
boats.

In the med it very much depends. On the southern shore (Morocco, Algeria,
Tunesia, Libia) only Tunesia offers decent marina's. I do not know of many
moorings there, and take into account the unstable political situation. A
Belgian cruising couple has been taken into hostage for about 2 years while
sailing there. In general, hardly any cruising is done on the southern
mediteranean shore.
The eastern end (Israel, Egypt, Lebannon) is no place to stay if you want to
take a rest. No good anchorages there due to the low sandy coast. You cannot
enter the river Nile if you are a bit over 1 meter deep due to the bar at the
entrance.
On the Northern shore, Turkey (is that the correct english spelling ?), Greece
and Yugoslavia are the best places to go if you want to stay at anchor.
Italy, southern France and Spain are very densely populated, no more
unspoiled anchorages there. The islands would be your best bet.
On the Atlantic coast of Spain, Portugal and France there are hardly any safe
anchorages. Once in the channel, There are many marina's, but expensive,
Cowes being the most expensive centre point there (a pound a foot). Very few
safe anchorages:
On the North Sea absolutely no anchorages in Belgium, Holland and Germany due
to low sandy coast. An average of 10 euro per night for a 31 ft boat in a
marina. You have to go north to Western Norway or the Baltic to find free
safe anchorages, but the general living is very expensive there.
In short, I only learned to anchor while cruising around the atlantic, after
20 years of sailing on the North Sea.

I know the feeling perfectly well ...
Have a look at my website if you want some general information on ocean
cruising with an old 31 ft boat (it has been sold by now, I still have to
update the web pages).
